Before you start

Android requires every third-party keyboard to be enabled by the person using the device. An app cannot silently turn itself on or replace your current keyboard. This protects anything you type from being accessed by a keyboard you did not choose.

Install TypeRoam, open the app, and sign in with Google to use online Pro features. Ordinary keyboard typing remains available even when online features are unavailable.

Enable TypeRoam

  1. Open TypeRoam from your Android app list.
  2. Open Settings, then choose Keyboard.
  3. Tap the option to enable TypeRoam. Android opens its system keyboard-management screen.
  4. Turn on TypeRoam and confirm the Android notice.
  5. Return to TypeRoam and choose the option to switch keyboards.
  6. Select TypeRoam from the system keyboard picker.
Why does Android show a warning? Android displays a standard notice for every keyboard that you enable. Only use keyboards you trust, and review the TypeRoam Privacy Policy before enabling online voice or AI features.

Switch keyboards later

You do not need to disable TypeRoam when you want to use another keyboard. Tap a text field to open the keyboard, then use Android's keyboard button or globe key to choose a different enabled keyboard. The exact button position varies by phone maker and Android version.

To return to TypeRoam, open the same keyboard picker and select it again. Your TypeRoam settings and account remain in place when you switch away temporarily.

Verify the setup

Open a simple app such as Notes, tap inside a text field, and confirm that the TypeRoam keyboard appears. Type a short sentence with the letter keys. Then, if you are signed in and have Pro access, try the microphone using the steps in How to use voice typing on Android.

Troubleshooting

TypeRoam is enabled but does not appear

Open the Android keyboard picker while a text field is active and select TypeRoam. Enabling a keyboard and selecting the current keyboard are two separate actions.

The keyboard picker is missing

Search Android Settings for keyboard list, on-screen keyboard, or default keyboard. Device makers use different labels for the same system screen.

The microphone does not work

Keyboard activation does not automatically grant microphone access. Allow microphone permission when TypeRoam asks, then confirm that you are online, signed in, and have active Pro access.
